Batu Ferringhi in Penang - Lone Pine HotelLone Pine Hotel at Batu Ferringhi Beach I was in Batu Ferringhi for a luncheon ten years ago with some friends and fell in love with the Lone Pine Hotel. I went again and noticed a few changes, they were unobtrusive to blend in with the old architecture but still noticeable. At first glance it is nondescript, if you were to compare it with massive towers of other hotels in the touristy area of Batu Ferringhi. Then, I noticed a newly placed swimming pool and also contemporary Balinese style reception area and private courtyards which were built for the ground floor rooms of two of the blocks.
It only has 50 rooms and all of them are housed in three blocks of two storey buildings. The architecture is definitely colonial, spanning over an area of 4 acres, including a bungalow which now houses a Hainanese restaurant and a stable with ponies to boot. There are seven types of rooms including two types of suites. All of them are spacious, furnished with solid wood antique furniture, with private balconies or courtyards. Some of them face the sea, while those which do not, have a courtyard or a balcony.
I particularly like the tall and narrow shutter windows at the balconies. The dressing table with its swiveling mirror is also such a delight. The balconies are also furnished with old kopi tiam round dining table and chairs. Special mention is the Deluxe Suite. It is a 600 square feet of old world splendor. It is located on the top floor of the main building. It has its own private stairway that leads to a landing in front of a grand entrance. The master bedroom is complete with a king sized four poster bed and an attached bathroom. There is a living room, a dining area, a single bedroom with another adjoining bathroom and also a kitchenette with modern appliances such as a microwave oven. You may re-live the lives of the old masters and the good news is, the price is affordable for once in a lifetime experience. It is a true reminder of a bygone era. The good old days of Batu Ferringhi in Penang which is almost not to be found anymore.
I was informed that some of the furniture came from E&O Hotel itself when it was being renovated. There are no indication of modern electronics to mar the atmosphere as all mini-bars and television are tastefully hidden in special wooden cabinets. However, to keep up with the demand of modern travelers, the hotel now has Internet services as well as Wi-Fi in the dining area. The beachThe beach is right in front of the hotel. There is a private lawn with hammocks strung over the casuarinas trees. Sea water at Batu Ferringhi is not crystal clear, but the beach is clean despite the human traffic that pass through it. There are several water sports you can participate in: jet ski, sea canoes and even para-sailing. Or, just curl up with a good book on the lounge chairs and simply bask in the sun. A beach resort is not complete without its reflexology and body massage hut. De-stress and rejuvenate your senses while being treated by a masseuse. I can understand why that most of the guests are regulars here. They enjoy privacy, fresh air and good food offered at Lone Pine Hotel. Events and functions
