George Town Hotels
George Town is recently added to the UNESCO World Heritage. It is the old Armenian Quarter that has much to offer to tourists but there is much more. Think about it, with it's Malay, Chinese and Indian history, there are few places in Malaysia (except maybe Malacca) where you find so much history preserved. Wandering through the heritage areas alone is worth a visit to Penang.
George Town has plenty of hotels to stay near to the interesting sites, see for example our Penang Heritage page or the Burmese Temple. But where to stay? We offer you our favorite hotels in the city center though we had to separate the Gurney Drive hotels otherwise this page would be too long.
Eastern & Oriental Hotel
The Eastern & Oriental Hotel or E&O as it is also known, is one of the oldest hotels in Penang. For that reason the hotel is also a heritage building. If there is one hotel where you can smell the old grandeur of the colonial days with all the modern facilities, it's the E&O.
The E&O is a popular choice for tourists, businessmen and locals who have to celebrate something (weddings, reunions etc.).
The hotel is central located within walking distance of for example Penang Road, the Blue Mansions, several food courts and the Penang Museum.
Further there are buses nearbyu to bring you to the Armenian Quarter in just 15 minutes and of course there are plenty of taxis happy to drive you around.
Rooms and suites at E&O are all up to modern standard 5 star hotel rooms.
The Yeng Keng (literally means "City of Swallow" in Mandarin) is a boutique hotel in George Town. It's a heritage boutique hotel located in Chulia Street in the heart of Penang. The hotel opened after renovations in 2010.
The hotel has 20 rooms, including 4 suites. If you are looking for a stylish hotel to stay in, conveniently located right in the city center, Yeng Keng hotel is the place to be. It's a wonderful place.
The Tune Hotel is a brand new and exciting hotel in downtown Penang.
Great location with easy access to facilities nearby such as Komtar, bus terminal, eatery, shopping and convenience shops. Staff are friendly and helpful.
Major sights are within the vicinity. Think of shopping malls, food courts, the historical Armenian Quarter, heart of the Penang World Heritage City.
Transport is easy with the Komtar bus station nearby for going around in Penang. Ferry is a little far but there are buses and taxis available.
The hotel is as cheap as you can get it if you book early!
23 Love Lane
The 23 Love Lane is a heritage hostel and a good one. It's not the cheapest but it is one to explore. There are only 8 rooms and should you want to stay here you have to book in advance. Disadvantage, during the oridinary school days, there is a lot of traffic on Love Lane from the school opposite of the street.
A very interesting option in the Chulia Street/Love Lane area is Muntri Mews, a renovated heritage house where originally downstairs the horses were kept and upstairs people lived.
The renovated house is in fascinating state. Technically it's a B&B but in reality it's just a wonderful heritage hotel in a small street in the heart of the city. The downstairs restaurant serves breakfast which is included in the price. The restaurant offers decent food but to be honest, I was not impressed enough especially knowing that in the area you can get better. The rooms however are great!
Bayview Beach Resort Hotel
The Bayview Beach Hotel offers exactly what the name suggests, a hotel with rooms over the Bay in the Straits of Malacca, but only the top floors.
Some claim the Bayview breakfast is the best way to start a day in Penang.
Although the name suggest different, the location of the hotel is at Penang Road, not at the beach side.
It IS however a great location with the end of the month cultural Little Penang Street Market just at the back of the hotel. Plenty of eateries are around and you will have great connections to the rest of George Town.
Sunway Georgetown Hotel
The Sunway Georgetown Hotel is conveniently located behind the Komtar shopping building and the central local bus station, at a few minutes walk. The old historical heritage city center is a few minutes further.
The 4 star hotel has 240 rooms and is an excellent choice for both tourist and businessmen. The beaches of Batu Ferringhi and Teluk Bahang are easy to reach by taxi and the airport is 30 minutes by taxi.
The Cititel Hotel is located on Penang Road. It's very popular.
With its location you are close to all the major attractions in George Town. Try some of the hawker stalls (Red Garden is a 2 minute walk) at night or visit the nearby located Museum.
The hotel is a an excellent choice for tourist and businessmen alike.
Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion
Another excellent choice in George Town is the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion. Located close to the heart of George Town, this is your change to stay in an excellent preserved and well renovated Chinese courtyard house.
It is, of course, also a heritage house. Originally it was the residence of Cheong Fatt Tze. The house was build by master craftsmen from China using building materials imported from the West over a seven year period between 1896 and 1904.
The mansion has 38 rooms. Although some travelers complain about the strictness of the hotel (no photos), it is a beautiful place to stay, conveniently located near Penang Road, and with good connections further into George Town.
Grand Continental Hotel
The Grand Continental Hotel is another great (and popular) choice. It's located near Komtar in the heart of George Town. The hotel has an indoor swimming pool. I have stayed here quite a few times with great pleasure. Out of the high season, they often have great rooms heavy discounted.
The hotel has a restaurant: Pinang Selera which serves a wide variety of international cuisine and local favorites.
