What would you recommend to eat in Malaysia?

Malaysians are food crazy. It is hard to mention one special dish which I recommend to eat in Malaysia. From basic nasi lemak and roti canai to mee rebus, ikan bakar to steamboat, from steamed fish to curry chicken, tom yam and laksa to ho kien mee, everybody has favourites.

I was walking in Penang (!!) when I spoke with a guy. He said: "The food in Malaysia is so disappointing. There's not much choice, just fried rice, fried noodles and roti canai. Compared to Thailand Malaysia is a disappointment."

Honestly I didn't know what I was hearing. The Malaysian cuisine is extensive, better in quality and quantity then in many other countries (including Thailand) and cheap. But what would recommend people to try?

There's so many dishes. Therefore I need your help.

  • What would you say is the most essential dish a visitor should try to get an idea of the Malaysian cuisine?
  • Do you have a recommendation what Malaysian dish someone should try to cook at home?
  • If travellers want to attend cooking class, what Malaysian dish they should learn first?
  • Is there a "best" place to experience the "best" Malaysian cuisine?

Give others what you think is the best, greatest, most yummy dish in Malaysia:
