Hi-Q organic farm opened in PangkorThursday 18th May 2006 Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi opened formally the first biotechnology and organic resort project in Malaysia. The Hi-Q Organic Park Hotel Resorts and Farms in Pangkor, a joint venture between Global Hi-Q Malaysia Sdn Bhd and Hi-Q Bio-Tech International (Taiwan) Ltd will target mainly the Chinese market. It is expected to earn around RM 100.000 ($25000) annually from the export of fish, shrimps and fruits to China and Taiwan.
The total investment is over RM 120.000 (around $40.000) in Teluk Dalam. It will involve self-sustaining and ecologically balanced fish fry, livestock and vegetable farm. For Malaysia and thus for Pulau Pangkor this is the first biotechnology and organic resort. For the Taiwanese investors Pangkor is an excellent place to set up this hi-tech farm because of the constant water temperature as the water temperature in Taiwan goes below 20°C. For a prawn farm which produces the whole year, a water temperature of 28-30°C is excellent.
"The demand for high quality garoupa is huge in China and this is something the project is setting its sights on," said Hi-Q Bio-Tech's managing director Johnson Chang from Taiwan. Other problem in Taiwan that makes a facility there difficult and expensive are air pollution, water quality earthquake sensibility and typhoons.
The opening at Pulau Pangkor, at Teluk Dalam by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi took place at Teluk Dalam at a grand opening. Many of the Taiwanese business men who have invested in the project came from Taiwan to attend the opening. "We plan to set a high quality fry nursery, including the garoupa fry nursery, where within six months' time, we will be able to start supplying quality fry to local breeders and also fresh adult garoupa by the end of this year" Chang said at a press conference earlier this year. Chang said the first phase of the project involved the development of hatcheries, fish ponds, livestock, fruits and vegetables which would occupy about 50 to 60 percent of the area and is expected to fully completed by 2008. The farms should be ready by 2010 when the resort will officially be opened.
For the local Malaysian fish breeders the project has an interested aspect. They now rely on overseas supply for their fry. However, 40-60% end up dead. With the supply from nearby the costs for the local fish farms can be reduced. With the arrival of the Hi-Q Organic Park Hotel Resorts and Farms another tourist attraction will be added to the island. Indoor fishing will be available with jungle treks, spa and villas where tourist can enjoy the pleasures of Pangkor. "This unique marine aquaculture was developed to satisfy the global need for high quality, pollution-free marine fish without damaging the environment," as Hi-Q Malaysia's chairman Mohd Nasir Abdul Rashid said. By the end of the year the first results of this project will be visible. So far the opening gave a glimpse of the future will looks bright for Pulau Pangkor as a major export area of fish to Taiwan and mainland China. Addition, September 2007Earlier this week I had to opportunity to have a boat around Pangkor Island. From nearby I could see the progress in the work for the Hi-Q organic farm.
It seems they are making progress. Keep an eye on the page as I will keep posting. Back to the top of Hi-Q organic farm opened in Pangkor Back to Pangkor Events and Festivals Back to Pulau Pangkor.com homepage
