The Grand Kampar HotelThe Grand Kampar Hotel Even though I have been to the Gua Tempurung caves, I have not
visited Kampar. This is because, I was with a teambuilding course with a
group of 10 people and on another occasion with a Chinese International School
students. With both
groups, we stayed at either Pangkor or Taiping.
My friend Miss Rosmah was surprised "Kampar is really nice, and it's a shame you haven't been here", she told me. Why don't you come over and see for yourself?". So I had a good "excuse" to go. Visit a friend and at the same time check the hotel where Miss Rosmah works. As if I needed an excuse! The Grand Kampar Hotel is not "just another" hotel. The hotel is a stylish building you can see from afar from both north and south side. It's built in the new part of Kampar. Especially at night it has a cozy atmosphere with small restaurants offering different food, from Thai (recommended here) to Chinese and Malay. You can chill out in the cool evening breeze watching your favorite football game or simply relax and look back on your day spent in Kampar.
RoomsThe hotel has 155 rooms available for a surprisingly low price. There are 4 different types:
All rooms, yes, I have seen them all, are great. I stayed in the Standard Room. It was very spacious, with very comfortable bed, power hot/cold shower, fridge, coffee and tea making facilities. Of course, like all the other good hotels that I had stayed before, the room had the air-conditioning, cable TV with in-house movies, IDD telephone, hair dryer (though I don't even have hair!) and an electronic key for the lock. I could have brought my laptop because there is wireless internet connection covering the whole area. A great service. I am a curious person so I asked Miss Rosmah to show me the other types of rooms. The family suite with 1 double and 2 single beds looked very nice and comfortable:
But if you come for business and you need a hotel room with a work space, you will be well served too, the executive suite has a bedroom and a living room. Breakfast, Miss Rosmah told me was a simple fare. Well... it was a standard buffet with Malaysian and continental breakfast. Standard was rice, fried rice, fried noodles, vegetables, chicken and ... and ... too much to mention. I have to mention the nasi lemak which has very good chicken and excellent sambal. Of course coffee, tea, and fruit juices are available too. Fried eggs and toast were made on the spot. You can't get them fresher than that. Actually, lunch is also served in the cafe. Rice, noodles, vegetables, chicken and noodle soup. In short, a very good variety. It was hard not to eat too much! There is also a Chinese restaurant which mainly serves dinner. At the ground floor also, you will find the safe deposit box for use for the guests. At the Mezzanine Floor there is a business center with the Internet. For entertainment, they have the Alluvial Music Lounge. The Palong Function room is also located here. On the 1st Floor you will find the Timah Function Room while at the lower roof you will find the Treasure cafe, with a treasure garden and great views over the surroundings. There's also small gymnasium so that you do not miss daily your fitness regime. Next door is the Pewter Room while on the upper roof you will find the swimming pool. Gua Tempurung CavesOne excellent reason to visit Kampar are the Gua Tempurung Caves. I went a few times visiting. Together with friends I went in the upper (and easy accessible) areas but we also went into the deep dark and wet area. It was a spectacular experience. Here is more about the Gua Tempurung Caves near Kampar Kampar TownAlthough small, Kampar, in the Kinta Valley at the foot of Cameron Highlands. The Gua Tempurung are nearby, but how about fishing in the articial lakes which orginated after the tine miners left... or a jungle trek to see the worlds largest flower...
