Pulau Pangkor Newsletter No. 50: Swiss-Garden promo, Ipoh, Langkawi and more
October 31, 2008
Hello,

It's already November. I can hardly understand how fast time goes this year. Or is it just me? Maybe it is because I am busy too. Our Yangshuo website is growing fast but the Pangkor website, and that is what you want to hear, grows too. And we have reached edition No. 50 of the Pulau Pangkor Newsletter!

Last week I was at Pangkor to visit some friends. The shoplots which burned down last year are rebuild and at the point of reopening. See the post below.

And I was in the lucky circumstance to see 4 sea otters swimming and hunting when I was at Pasir Bogak. Fishermen were busy with beach fishing with nets (remember, it was Sunday and Public Holiday!). They caught a nice big pufferfish amongst other fish. It shows how empty the beach was, even at 2pm.

Ipoh, it's worth a visit!
====================================

Ipoh is a most ignored 3rd biggest city in Malaysia. I say "ignored" because for many locals it's not very "sexy". Speaking recently to a friend of me here in Sitiawan, he said: "... Ipoh is boring.. why would anyone want to visit? Locals only go there because it's the capital of Perak, not because it's fun to go there..."

Unfortunately it seems many people think like this. But is it a fair statement? I think NOT. Ipoh offers enough attractions to keep you busy for a couple of days.

Think about it... the Gua Tempurung Caves

Kellies Castle:

Just to mention only two of it's attractions.

And Ipoh has a couple of excellent hotels to make you feel comfortable:

What is Pre-Selling?
====================================

Building a website is building a business. Being a web designer is not  all you need to know. Many websites look beautiful but get hardly traffic. I see websites that tell you you should buy from their site without explaining why. For fact, did you know that people hardly go on the internet to BUY something? People go on the net to find information. Based on that information they MAY buy.

This means, a webmaster has to explain why you should buy a product from him. We call that Pre-Selling. I hear sometimes that pre-selling is a waste of energy. You want to sell. Of course you want to sell your product. Websites like Amazon.com and Buy.com are big enough to skip the pre-selling. They are big international companies that have a reliable status and everybody knows them.

How about you? How many people in the world know you? No one, except some friends and family. Therefore you HAVE to pre-sell and proof you are reliable and worth to buy from. Egoods are a good thing to sell online. It does not require any stock so it's easy distributing. But it still requires Pre-selling. Our special ebook selling page explains in detail how you generate substantial income with selling ebooks online:

Wildlife at Pangkor and Perak
====================================

Earlier this week I was at Pangkor. It was so called "high season" and many hotels were full booked. But I learned in the last 4 years that high season does not mean the beaches are also full. Last Sunday was such a day. I was swimming at Pasir Bogak when to my surprise 4 sea otters appeared. I know sea otters are regular seen at the more remote beaches in between Teluk Batik and Teluk Rubiah but I had never seen them around Pangkor, let alone at peak season.

The four were swimming and fishing for a while before they swam away out of sight. Then a few local fishermen started fishing from the beach. They basically dropped out a net and pulled the net in after a while. Their catch? A full grown pufferfish and other fish....

Two photos I made last Sunday about fishing from the beach are now available on the Pasir Bogak page. Check especially the huge pufferfish. :

Langkawi and the Langkawi Hotels
====================================

Langkawi is of course one of the must visit islands of Malaysia. It's indeed an amazingly beautiful set of islands.

- Get a boat and go snorkeling around the islands,

- Get a motorbike/bicycle and go around at Langkawi.

- Go up to enjoy the cable car

I can go on and on. There's a lot to do at Langkawi

Pangkor Island Beach Resort
====================================

Formerly known as the Pan Pacific, the Pangkor Island Beach Resort is one of the top hotels in Pangkor. It's located in Teluk Belanda, with a private beach and mini golf course (it's indeed very mini). The beach is very nice and clean and with swimming, canoeing, fishing, hiking and much more the Pangkor Island Beach resort has everything you want for a relaxing holiday. I almost forgot to mention, the restaurants are excellent, please try the fish dishes, they are suburb.

Malaysian Food
====================================

Malaysia is more then any country I traveled food obsessed. It seems sometimes that people care more about their meals then about their families, well... I know, I am exaggerating. The truth is that you can't get in a discussion with a Malaysian without getting a discussion about food. And it's not surprising.

The food in Malaysia is amazing. Some tourists claim the food is compared to Thai, Indian or Chinese food disappointing. What they really say is that they don't know what Malaysian food is! A tourist at Pangkor once told me "the food is so disappointing, it's only fried rice and fried noodles"... Fortunately it's a lot more then that!

The extraordinary mix of Malay, Indian and Chinese cuisine has created a unique kind of food nowhere else to find. Even the Indian or Chinese dishes are very different from the countries where they originate from. Compare for example the price and quality of a meal in Malaysia to the price/quality in Thailand. The Malaysians do a better job. For the same price you get a much better value.

The food courts are always the best options. Walk around make your choice. Because the competition is fierce at a food court, the stalls have no choice then do their best to make you happy, and they do!

Many tourist go back home with sweet memories of the Malaysian food. For those people we have a set of cooking books available.

And for those who do not know what Malaysian food is... here's a basic overview of the huge variety of the Malaysian cuisine:

Massage in Yangshuo
====================================

During my last visit to Yangshuo (65 km south of Guilin) in China, I had some troubles with my ankle. On recommendation of my friends in Yangshuo, I visited the local doctor. Doctor Lily is a doctor in Chinese medicine and offers excellent massage and acupuncture. Her way of working is based on an ancient traditional and knowledge to bring back the balance in the body. Her motto: "no pain no gain", and although this sounds not encouraging, she was very right in her statements.

I had serious benefits within days without using any chemicals, injections etc. Doctor Lily's massage is an amazing experience. And trust me, I have had massage all over Asia. I can tell the difference between average, good and excellent. Doctor Lily is one of the best I had. The only setback... she has her shop in Yangshuo China and not in Pangkor. But if you are at the point of visiting China, and in particular Yangshuo, Doctor Lily is the person you will want to see and let her give you a massage for either health or relaxation.

Here is what she offers::
