Merdeka Day, Independence day, Malaysia celebrates 50th birthday

Malaysia celebrates this year it's 50th birthday! And a birthday it will be. Many celebrations will take place all over the country. On August 30, 1957 Malaysia declared independent from Great Brittan. It was since 1511 that the Malaysians would rule over their own territory!

All over Malaysia you will find special celebrations going on, the biggest, of course, in Kuala Lumpur. As all Malaysians are very proud of their country, you will see many cars with the Malaysian flag very visible. As Merdeka Day is a public holiday, many shops and all official organizations will be closed. During the days public transport may be a little difficult to get as it is a good moment for many Malaysians to spend the holiday with the family. If you have to travel during the Merdeka Days, make sure you book your tickets in advance.

The Merdeka festivities around Pangkor and Lumut will take place at Teluk Rubiah. It will contain firework shows, blood donations, golf competitions, assembly of all the powerful motorbikes from 3 countries (Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore), paint ball, tug of war, concerts and more! The day starts early at 9am and will take until deep in the evening!

Royal Selangor Yacht Club, race around Pulau Pangkor

More Merdeka day events! Two years ago I witnessed the race of the Royal Selangor Yacht Club, then from Klang to Langkawi. This year the race goes from Klang to Pangkor with one day sailing around Pangkor. The aim is to provide an opportunity for Club sailing and motor yachts to race or cruise in company from Port Klang to Pulau Pangkor, and enjoy the delights of the islands and social camaraderie. It will be a good moment to see these wonderful boats sailing around. Two years back I was very impressed and I hope you will to.
