Pulau Pangkor Newsletter No. 39, Nine Emperor Gods, Ecology camp and Halloween! October 30, 2007 |
| Hello, Welcome back to a new edition of the Pulau Pangkor newsletter. I know, it's a little later then you are expecting but October was a very busy month for me. The last weeks I have hardly been at home. Running from Thailand to Penang to visit the Nine Emperor Gods festival back to Sitiawan to join Mr. Goh and his team for an ecology camp in Taiping and in between writing more about Pangkor, Yangshuo and my own bicycle adventures (my other two websites). So what can I offer your in this edition of the Pulau Pankor Newsletter?
Peter van der Lans Sitiawan PS Let me know what you like and what you don't like. All comments are welcome. Click here to write your comment: You can read latest updates in my Blogs: and

True, but the Nine Emperor Gods festival is celebrated by many Chinese in Malaysia, Thailand and other countries. Even here in Sitiawan there were celebrations though not as extensive as in Penang. I was invited to come to the Tow Boo Kong Temple in Butterworth. A few weeks before the festival Mrs. Pearly and Mr. Chandra invited me to join them to visit the Tow Boo Kong temple which is located not far from their home. During this visit we met the Lor Chu, one of the most important people in the celebrations. The Lor Chu, Mrs. Girlie urged us to come to the festival and experience this day by day. From what she described I got curious, and so were Mr. Chandra and Mrs. Pearly. Thus I came back and spend some evening in and around the temple. It was quite an experience. Here is a report what happened during the nine days: http://www.pulau-pangkor.com/nine-emperor-gods.html At daytime there was usually not much to do so we visited another Nine Emperor Gods temple, the Cheng Kon Sze in Penang (further uphill of the Kek Lok Si near Air Itam). Although this temple was much older and in some way very different, it was clear this temple, the Cheng Kon Sze, was dedicated to the same gods of Taoism. It was a great place, very spiritual, here's what that temple looks like: http://www.pulau-pangkor.com/penang-temples.html And if that is not enough for you, and you need some insight information, Mrs. Pearly wrote a few extensive pages, please click here for the start: http://www.my-island-penang.com/nine-emperor-gods.html and http://www.my-island-penang.com/Cheng-Kon-Sze.html -----------------------------------------
Ecology camp in Taiping, Kuala Sepetang and Gua Temperung
Just before I went to Penang to enjoy the Nine Emperor Gods festival, Mr. Goh from Explore the Wilderness called me if I was interested in joining him for an ecology camp. He told me he had a group of 160 students plus teachers from the Green Garden International School Kuala Lumpur visiting.
The 3 days ecology camp would consist of visiting the Gua Temperung caves, Kuala Sepetang and the mangrove forest and some activities in Taiping. I was interested, so here's what happened in those 3 days:

Timeshares afford vacationers the opportunity to visit their favorite vacation destination year after year without struggling to find appropriate accommodations. Because they offer pre-paid, week long accommodation, timeshares relieve much of the hassle of seeking out clean, comfortable hotels or motels and securing daily accommodation. Renting day-to-day space at a hotel can often prove quite costly. Owning vacation property in your favorite destination, like Pulau Pangkor, offers a great alternative that can be very cost-effective. Doesn't this sound great? Come on in and read more here:

Rocket Rice Cooking, an RCC
I know, I wrote about it in the last edition too, but this is such a special thing. Even people in Kedah, were this originates from have seldom seen such a huge rice steamer. It's not a rice COOKER, but a steamer. Watch the video on ...

Langkawi, another beach holiday paradise
Langkawi is more popular then Pangkor and some say more beautiful then Penang. That depends of course of what you are looking for. Pangkor, Langkawi and Penang all have their charm. If you look for quietness, Pangkor is probably a better choice, if you like to experience some cultural- and food adventures, Penang may be more interesting (see the Nine Emperor Gods festival above), but for a mix of beaches, shopping and diving, Langkawi may be your choice.
Here is a website by Ros and Zaly that answers all your questions regarding Langkawi, it's the one I use myself when I visit Langkawi.
