Hello,
Welcome back to our Pangkor newsletter. We have a special edition this time with only a few subjects. They are all about the same subject: preservation of our planet in one way or another. First is the very important Home movie, a movie about our planet, our home. It's a movie I think everybody should watch.
WildAsia has send us some new information about activities they are developing here in Malaysia, I think they're doing an outstanding job and they deserve to have your attention too.
And last, but not least, we have a good example of sustainable preservation where nature and economy can go hand in hand. Enjoy reading!

Home, the movie - essential watching ====================================
"We are living in exceptional times. Scientists tell us that we have 10 years to change the way we live, avert the depletion of natural resources and the catastrophic evolution of the Earth's climate.
The stakes are high for us and our children. Everyone should take part in the effort, and HOME has been conceived to take a message of mobilization out to every human being.
For this purpose, HOME needs to be free. A patron, the PPR Group, made this possible. EuropaCorp, the distributor, also pledged not to make any profit because Home is a non-profit film.
HOME has been made for you: share it! And act for the planet." Quote from Yann Arthus-Bertrand, movie maker

The movie is FREE, and until the 15th June available on Youtube. After that, you will have to visit the Home website

I strongly suggest you watch this movie as it is relevant for everybody, regardless your country, race, sex, age, culture, rich, poor...

WildAsia's projects ====================================
Additional to the Home Movie, WildAsia is busy setting up a couple of new and important projects.
- Plant a tree
- Take a Picture for Conservation
- Kid's Activities (Nature hunt)
Take a Picture for Conservation
WildAsia writes: "Come down to Kota Damansara Community Forest this June 21st with your digital cameras and fancy SLRs! Snap pictures of nature, people or the activities that are happening on that day and stand to win attractive prizes!" Unfortunately I can't be there as I will be in China but I encourage you to go. In the next edition of the Pangkor Newsletter I will publish the winning photo.

Pledge A Tree, WildAsia's continuing project
Trees are probably the most important living things on the planet. They provide us with oxygen. Without trees we can not live. More and more forest is gone. In Malaysia a lot of forest is illegally logged. Not only on Borneo, but also in the vicinity of Pangkor: Bukit Larut near Taiping. There are people
concerned, see this Facebook entry:
- http://www.facebook.com/pages/Save-Bukit-Larut/59094069637?ref=mf
WildAsia has an excellent project running to plant more trees. WildAsia says: "Come and Plant-a-Tree with your favorite radio announcers on June 21st! Pledge one tree or more and choose which radio announcer you want to plant with. The great thing about this is that you will be helping to conserve our environment for a better future while spending an awesome day out at one of Kuala Lumpur's least known forests. It is also Father's Day, so why not make it a family outing! It can't get any better than this! "

Eco-Playground (Kid's Activities, Nature hunt)
As WildAsia says: "Come join the Nature Hunt and DISCOVER what kind of creatures live in the Kota Damansara Community Forest Park. Collect specimens, take photographs and make a nature collage! Learn how each living form interacts with each other to ensure survival and keep the forest thriving with life!" It'll
be fun!

==================================== Do You Love To Travel? Make It Your Business! ====================================
It's possible... a travel website that pays your journeys... the Pangkor website proofs it!
Based on the money I earn I am able to travel (next month back to China). Personally I don't see any reason why it only works for me. What I can do, you can do too.
A travel site doesn't have to be built around an exotic location. You are, after all, an expert on your city or region.

Sugar Wreck removed? ====================================
Richard Sills wrote us:
"We have just been informed that there are plans to remove the sugar wreck in
the water of Perhentian islands. The plan is to remove it for salvage of scrap metal. This is pointless as the wreck has been down there for 9 years and any metal left would not be useable to salvage. I am trying to raise awareness about this and seeing if there is anyone that could help me put a stop to it."

Sustainable mangrove forests in Kuala Sepetang
====================================
Contrary to some beliefs, nature preservation and economy can go hand in hand. A good example of this can be found in Kuala Sepetang. Here you find one of the bigger mangrove forests in Malaysia. Here you also find a flourishing charcoal industry. Here industry and nature conservation go hand in hand.
I have been several times in the Kuala Sepetang mangrove forest. It requires some preparation but the forestry has boats for visitors available. Once in the mangrove forest you can feel the energy coming out of it. Parts of the forest are used for the charcoal industry, other parts are untouched. And other parts
are ready to be re-planted. The regulations are strict and the charcoal factories, like our friend Mr. Chuah, understand the importance of it. Mr. Chuah once told me that without sustainable logging, he would not have a business in
the coming up years.
Still, the situation is not ideal. The fishing industry is putting a heavy toll on the mangrove forest. As it is only the forest that is protected and not the animals, there is a danger that the ecosystem is disturbed. So although the forest as a forest is well maintained, there's more work to do in terms of a
total protection for all animals too.
Trust me, the mangrove forest is really beautiful and worth a visit.

Teluk Bahang Penang
====================================
Teluk Bahang is another good example where nature preservation is taken serious. The park has professional staff who know what they are talking about. Logging in the park is an absolute impossibility. It's not a very well known tourist attraction but Teluk Bahang is certainly worth a visit.
Located at the north west end of Penang, and assessable by bus within 20 minutes from Georgetown, this should be your destination if you want to understand something of nature in Penang. It's a beautiful park, trust me.
