Pulau Pangkor Newsletter No. 46, Turtles, conservation, teambuilding and jungle trekking
June 02, 2008
Hello,

Welcome again to a  new edition of the Pulau Pangkor Newsletter, again a little later then you may expect it. My excuse this time? A week with the Australian International School in Teluk Batik, another couple of days in the jungle with rope course etc. Further the revamping of my http://www.bicycle-adventures.com and http://www.yangshuo-travel-guide.com took me a lot of time. I also visited Teluk Bahang in Penang.

As a result I had to relax a bit, took the bicycle and went to Segari to visit the Turtle Breeding Station and found some surprises there. As a result I got in touch with Eileen, a lady from wildasia.net. See the turtles section in this newsletter.

Apart of what is in this newsletter, I have much more to tell you but it doesn't fit in in this edition.

What do we have in this newsletter? :

  • Turtles in Malaysia ...
  • ... and become a turtle ambassador
  • Teluk Bahang
  • Diving with Imp
  • Advertisement: Timeshare
  • How to build a website that sells?
  • Plant a tree for the planet
  • The revamp of Yangshuo-Travel-Guide.com
  • Australian International School spend a week in Teluk Batik

Turtles in Malaysia ...
====================================

Turtles are an endangered species in Malaysia. This is partly because we humans use more and more natural resources and give less space to nature. Another part is the continuation of human consumption of turtle meat and turtle eggs. Fortunately there are people in Malaysia who do care for nature and turtles.

As you may remember, I wrote a page about the Turtle Breeding station at the beach near Segari, 30 km north of Lumut:

http://www.pulau-pangkor.com/turtles-in-malaysia.html

Recently I went again. It was my third visit. I have to tell you the truth, I wasn't really planning to visit the station as I was more interested to cycle across the jungle and estates to Teluk Senanging. However, I was there, thus I visited the Turtle Breeding Station. Again there were plenty of young turtles but this time they had a species I had never seen before: a few Painted Terrapins. You can see a photo I took at: the station (4th photo on the page)

...and become a turtle ambassador!
====================================

While I was rewriting my turtles in Malaysia page, I was contacted by Eileen, a lady from wildasia.net. She told me about a turtles conservation project by the Turtle Research and Rehabilitation Group, formerly known as Sea Turtle Research Unit (SEATRU) from the Universiti Malaysia Terengganu. They have set up a project which deserves attention.

The motto: “Say NO to turtle and terrapin eggs” is important in a country where you still find turtle and tortoise eggs and animals at some local markets. People are willing to pay as much as a US dollar for ONE eggs. I am not joking, these kinds of practice are still going on. Many people apparently think it doesn't really matter to eat turtle eggs.

However, the mortality of the offspring of one turtle is about 98% in the first year. We NEED to help them to survive our own greed. Become an ambassador and make people aware of this sort of crazy practice. Here's how YOU can help:

Teluk Bahang
====================================

Talking about turtles, a few weeks back I was invited by Mrs. Pearly to join her and group of photographers (Photokrazy) from Penang to visit Teluk Bahang. I went to Teluk Bahang National Park in Penang. What a beautiful little piece of nature is here to find!

Teluk Bahang is located in the north west corner of Penang island. We took a boat to visit Pantai Kerachuk, one of the beaches and popular picnic places in the weekends.

There are a few short hikes to do, even for non experienced hikers and children these walks are excellent to learn a little from the jungle which is pretty much unspoiled here. And at the beach is small hatching station. Eggs are dug up and hatched. After about 6 weeks the young turtles are released. If you stay until sunset, you may be able to see the staff releasing the baby turtles.

Diving with Imp
====================================

We have been able to set up a connection with a divemaster Imran Ahmad, also known as Imp. He has excellent tours in East Malaysia and Indonesia available. Plus, he is an extraordinary photographer. We are happy he allowed us to use some of his photos. Check it out

Timeshare

Timeshares afford vacationers the opportunity to visit their favorite vacation destination year after year without struggling to find appropriate accommodations. Because they offer pre-paid, week long accommodation, timeshares relieve much of the hassle of seeking out clean, comfortable hotels or motels and securing daily accommodation. Renting day-to-day space at a hotel can often prove quite costly. Owning vacation property in your favorite destination, like Pulau Pangkor, offers a great alternative that can be very cost-effective.  Doesn't this sound great? Come on in and read more here:

How to build a website that sells?
====================================

The Pangkor website keeps growing. May was a top month in the history of our humble website. We came close to 50.000 visitors and almost 150.000 page views. Not bad for an island in Malaysia which is virtually unknown outside Malaysia! The question is how we did it. How can a website about a small island be so successful?

The answer is quite simple. It's all based on one principle: CONTENT. Write good content, generate Traffic, Pre-sell and Monetize. It's called CTPM and here's the explanation:

- http://ctpm.sitesell.com/webselling64290.html

- http://www.pulau-pangkor.com/complete_site_build_it.html

But if content rules, how come especially the Pangkor website while so unknown attracts visitors? Again it is content and the use of keywords that explains the success. As you know, many websites look beautiful, many look probably more beautiful then pulau-pangkor.com. Still, I hear those webmasters searching why no one finds them.

The answer is quite simple. Either the subject of the website is too vague, too broad or too small. And those websites do not have the tools we have. Yes, we have tools the rest do not have. Some tools are free for you to use. Like SearchIt:

- http://searchit.sitesell.com/webselling64290.html

This tool is extended in our package but it is still very valuable for you building a website.

Earlier this week I spoke with a lady who told me I better start blogging to earn money. Websites are not hip anymore. Everybody has a blog these days, "so it's easy to earn money". Earning money was never easy. Blogs by nature have short lived content. And yes, Google loves it, you score easy with a blog item. But the items also disappears easy. With a solid website it's different. Good quality content stays, attracts visitors and grows while older pages, even if you do not do anything with it, grow too. That does not happen with blogs. Old pages disappear.

We have build 3 websites based on the CTPM principle and they work very well. But then again, that is me talking. Check some other case studies.

- http://case-studies.sitesell.com/webselling64290.html

As you see, anyone can do what I did with the Pangkor site. The magic, well... is a simple technique ANYONE can follow.

Plant a tree for the planet
====================================

Plant a tree for the planet is a project by www.wildasia.net The project is to create awareness for the jungle in Malaysia where timber, in many cases illegal destroys significant parts of the jungle (Borneo is notorious).

What does wildasia.net say, here's a statement from their website:

"Wild Asia is working with private and owners across Malaysia to help create and encourage new "wild lands" to develop for wildlife and the local environment. We call these "wild lands" natural corridors." Now that is an interesting point.

Wildasia.net goes further: "Our goal is also to ensure that more indigenous trees are identified and preserved through propagation and protection. Such trees will attract and enhance local biodiversity and demonstrate the landowners support for conservation. By supporting tree planting, you are indirectly encouraging local nursery men to continue to propagate and nurture a variety of indigenous tree species." FANTASTIC!!!!

We from Pulau-pangkor.com fully support this project. The jungle is an important part of our ecosystem and we need to preserve that. However, preservation is not enough. Awareness WHY we have to take care of trees is essential. It all starts at schools.

But YOU can support this project too! How?

The Malaysian jungle is beautiful, wherever you go, Borneo, Cameron Highlands or even the Pangkor jungle or the mainland jungle at Teluk Batik. Malaysia is and should be proud of their jungles. Let us work together to keep the jungle and bring it to the attention to everybody.

The revamp of Yangshuo-travel-guide.com
====================================

After the bicycle website: http://www.bicycle-adventures.com revamp it was time to revamp our Yangshuo website too. Here's the result:

- http://www.yangshuo-travel-guide.com

and even better... the Pulau Pangkor website will go into revision too. However, as the Pangkor site is now around 400 pages big (!!), it will take some time.

Australian International School spend a week in Teluk Batik
====================================

I told you I have been busy the last weeks. One reason was my presence with Mr. Goh's Teambuilding business with the Australian International School. It was the second time I participate but it was not the second time the Australian International School came to Teluk Batik, they had been here now several times.

The program for the 11-13 years old students was filled with activities in the jungle and the beach. I was involved in the rope course, obstacle course, jungle trekking and some beach activities. Here's what happened:

Jungle trekking with little children
====================================

Nazlina, our agent in Malaysia asked me to show her a little more of the Teluk Batik jungle and asked if it was possible to do a short trek and rope course with her 2 children, 5 and 10 years old. I told her we could do a private trek and rope course. Nazlina did the rope course, low and high while her son Johan had no problems with the lower rope course. As he is quite small for his age, he couldn't do the high rope course, at 7 meters above the ground.

The jungle trek brought us to the obstacle course where Nazlina and her children experienced some of the difficulties of the course Mr. Goh build. After that w did a jungle trek of about 2 hours. Johanna, the 5 years old daughter of Nazlina found the trekking tiring but very interesting. She had no problems at all to do the whole 2 hours trekking through hills and the canyon in between Teluk Batik and Teluk Rubiah. Johan, 10 years old, was leading us through the canyon to a hidden beach as he had done the trekking before and loves this kind of outdoor activities.

Mr. Goh's team building activities are available for all ages. He can organize your team building camps in the Teluk Batik area.

Check for example:

- http://www.pulau-pangkor.com/student-adventure-teambuilding.html

and some examples of groups we have served in Teluk Batik and Teluk Rubiah:

- http://www.pulau-pangkor.com/canoe-around-pangkor.html

- http://www.pulau-pangkor.com/ecology-camp.html

We are able to organize jungle trekking and other jungle activities for groups of 25 people minimum. Check our details on the pages above mentioned
