Pulau Pangkor Newsletter No. 44, Activities and new facilities at Pangkor April 06, 2008 |
| Hello, Welcome again to a new edition of the Pulau Pangkor Newsletter, a little later then you may expect it. It's all because I was a week out to Thailand, spend a few days in Langkawi and then I got the opportunity to canoe around Pangkor. As you see, it's been quite busy the last weeks. In the weeks before my short Thailand trip I went a few times to Pangkor. The management of the Vikri Beach Resort told me I was welcome at an Indian Wedding at the resort but at the same time the Nipah Bay Villa had opened a new rooftop cafe. The rebuilding of the main street in Pangkor town is progressing rapidly now and on top I did a short trek with Mr. Goh to find a new jungle path to Teluk Segadas. Later more about all this. Diving season on the east coast is starting which means more and more people want to explore the underwater world of Malaysia. And on top of this all, Pieter Kruger has send me some photos of Lumut from years ago! But, what are the subjects in this newsletter? :

==================================== Finally the islands of Malaysia's east coast are open after the rainy season. Diving is again possible. And the east coast has plenty of excellent dive spots. We wrote a set of pages about diving in Perhentian: http://www.pulau-pangkor.com/diving-in-perhentian.html The Arwana Perhentian Eco Resort and Beach Chalet has all you need for a relaxed holiday. It also operates a diving service from the beach. You can't get it better. http://www.pulau-pangkor.com/perhentian.html ==================================== We have been able to set up a connection with a divemaster Imran Ahmad, also known as Imp. He has excellent tours in East Malaysia and Indonesia available. Plus, he is an extraordinary photographer. We are happy he allowed us to use some of his photos. Check it out http://www.pulau-pangkor.com/diving-in-komodo.html http://www.pulau-pangkor.com/diving-in-raja-ampat.html ==================================== As I wrote above, I have spend the last weeks on and off at Pulau Pangkor. There were various reasons for it. The Vikri Beach Resort hosted an Indian wedding: http://www.pulau-pangkor.com/indian-wedding-pangkor.html ... and that same day I met Mr. David from GBBM Serendah Branch who brought over 50 children plus staff to the Vikri Beach Resort because here he could have the activities with such a group he could not perform in his own area. http://www.pulau-pangkor.com/group-activities.html Needless to say that the Vikri was an excellent choice. Mr. David explained: "Here we can do what we want to do with this group. We feel safe, happy, comfortable and welcome." Coming to Pangkor and need space for a group? The Vikri Beach Resort is your place to be: http://www.pulau-pangkor.com/vikry-beach-resort.html

Timeshare
Timeshares afford vacationers the opportunity to visit their favorite vacation destination year after year without struggling to find appropriate accommodations. Because they offer pre-paid, week long accommodation, timeshares relieve much of the hassle of seeking out clean, comfortable hotels or motels and securing daily accommodation. Renting day-to-day space at a hotel can often prove quite costly. Owning vacation property in your favorite destination, like Pulau Pangkor, offers a great alternative that can be very cost-effective. Doesn't this sound great? Come on in and read more here:

________________________________________________________________ ==================================== March 21 is spring in the Northern Hemisphere. It's a time of growth and renewal. (If you're on the other side of the Equator, just pretend it's September. ;-) ) Are you looking to get a new business in bloom? Here's the good news! We have again the US$100 Spring Special. SBI! is a bargain at triple its usual $299 price. Those shameful Get-Rich-Quick products waste your time and money. And "cheap-quick," old-fashioned Web hosting and site builders only deliver near-certain failure for most people looking to start a small business online. So $299 is an unbeatable bargain, with unbeatable results. Now folks get a "Spring Break" on the price and build yourself a solid serious business that lasts. You can do it. If you are a work at home mom,

Nipah Bay Villa has made some serious work with their new Rooftop Cafe. On the roof of the new two storey extension on the back of the hotel, Mr. and Mrs. Sabtu have build a new set of rooms with on top a rooftop cafe. The name is Rooftop Cafe but Mrs. Sabtu told me they may change it to Eagles Nest Cafe because in an old tree top next to the hotel an eagle pair is nesting.
The cafe is a great addition to the already great hotel.

A few weeks ago Pieter Kruger, one of our first Newsletter readers send us some photos from the days he lived and worked (at the Powerplant) in Lumut. Pieter's photos are only about 6 to 8 years old but the change in Lumut is significant. This was Lumut as I remembered and I came for the first time here in 2003. In only 5 to 6 years Lumut has changed dramatically. See for yourself.
Thanks Pieter for the photos.

Mr. Goh from Explore the Wilderness called me last week. If I was interested in surveying a new jungle trek trail for a group he would receive later in April. The idea was to trek from Teluk Rubiah to Teluk Batik. We have been hiking around here but this time Mr. Goh wanted another, rougher trail. So we left in the morning to find an entrance from the Teluk Rubiah site.
It was quite hard, here's more about jungle trekking in this area, the first link is about the new trail we surveyed, the other two are older pages about different trails http://www.pulau-pangkor.com/jungle-trekking.html

http://www.pulau-pangkor.com/hiking-in-lumut.html ==================================== In this edition of the Pulau Pangkor Newsletter I would like to have some attention for a great website about the Outback in Australia. Personally I have never been to Australia, and I have never had the idea to visit it too. That was until I found Rita's website. Like I said, I was never much interested in Australia, but once I saw the logo of her website I started reading. Wouldn't it be nice to get a bicycle and cycle through this part of Australia.
I had not heard of the Outback but I found out it was in, roughly, east Australia but not too far east. Basically it's wilderness there. Then a friend from Australia send me a DVD with a BBC documentary about wildlife in Australia and I saw the by Nick Cave written movie The Proposition. The movie gives a good view of Australia's history and together with Rita's website, it's an excellent introduction into Australia. Rita's passion for Australia is infectious. Highly recommended

Over the years I have always enjoyed being on the water. Or in the water. Since I was a little kid I enjoyed swimming, I even played water polo at primary school! (not that I was a talent:). When I came back from my short visit to Thailand, I got a call. If I was interested in doing a canoeing trip around Pangkor. I was just back from Penang, with 195km cycling in my legs and it didn't seem wise to go from the bicycle straight into a canoe. But on the other hand, it could take months before I would get another chance. So I joined. And it was good fun. Here's the full story of that day:
