Sembilan Divers

Official opening of the diving shop in Lumut

Two full days will the opening take! Wow! And what do you get in two days? Speech after speech? No!

Claudia Jankewitz has set up a very special program. Saturday 25 September starts off with the official opening in the shop at 10.30.

The afternoon is reserved for trying scuba diving yourself if you have never done it before at the pool (from 2-5 pm). And in the evening there's a buffet dinner at Rockafella in Lumut. Not to be missed!

Sunday 26 September is reserved for going at sea.

And there is more, there are prizes to win. Which prizes? Ahhh...

The opening of a scuba diving shop in Lumut is unique. Claudia has not for nothing a range of activities ready. If you are in Pangkor or on the way, make sure you come around.

cameron-highland-destination.com

Cameron Highland are a major tourist attraction in Malaysia. Even in colonial times it was much in use. The English used it to escape from the tropical heat since the the highlands go up to around 1600 meter altitude. Therefore it can be quite cool.

Jan decided to write a website with all the details what to do, how to get there etc etc. about the Cameron Highlands. He has done a good job, I think. Give it a look, after all, your favorite holiday destination in Malaysia may be Pulau Pangkor, there are however other areas to be visited with their own specific charm.

The haze ; more about Pangkor weather

As you probably have been reading in the newspapers, seen on TV or heard from other travelers, there were the yearly bushfires in Sumatra and Borneo.

The good news is that there's hardly any problem with the haze, the sky is clear and the sun shines all day. And yes, occasionally a shower too. So, don't hesitate, check a hotel and come to enjoy the beauty of Pangkor.

Someone asked me, how about the rainy season. To be very honest with you, last year I saw more rain outside the rainy season then in the period itself. Pangkor is blessed with all year good weather.

Recipes

The last Pulau Pangkor Newsletter had some excellent recipes. Did you miss them? Click on

MORE RECIPES page to see them again. Or download your e-book copy here. You will find also two new recipes of dishes you will able to get at Pangkor island.

Indian Tosai

Tosai's are my favorite breakfast, that is to say, my favorite Indian breakfast. Tosai originate from south India where they called "dosa". Since dosa in Malay is a vulgar word, the dosa is transformed into tosai.

In principle a tosai is a flat crispy pancake made of flower and water. You eat it with different kind of sauces, curry, dahl and a type of sauce made of coconut chutney and chilies.

Unfortunately I haven't found any decent place at Pangkor to eat a good tosai. The best however you find in Sitiawan. The Home Curry House is indeed the home of Indian food in the area although, I have to admit, the new Nasi Kandar Restoran opposite of Fajar in Sitiawan has also a good selection of Indian food. There's more news on the Home Curry House coming up in the next newsletter.

How to make a tosai yourself ?

This instant recipe can be prepared in about 15 minutes.

  • 1 cup : all purpose flour
  • 1 cup : rice flour
  • 1 cup : buttermilk.
  • 1 to 1-1/4 table spoon of salt.
  • 1 to 2 table spoon of oil per tosai for frying.

You also need the dosa plate (you can substitute this with any flat non stick cooking plate)

Method: In a bowl mix all purpose flour, rice flour and the buttermilk. Add and stir salt. You don't have to let the batter stay before making tosai. Place a flat non stick cooking pan/plate on the stove and heat it.

Pour half a cup of the batter in the pan. Pour a little oil (1 spoon) along the edge of the dosai spread. After a while you can flip it to the other side and fry for a while. Serve it hot with a spicy chutney ore sambhar.

A good tosai is served in flipped over rectangle size or triangle size and is crispy.

Now this is the basic tosai. You can however mix this easily with anything further. For example: a masala tosai is a tosai filled with potatoes but you can fill it with vegetables or even fruit (as I once in India had).

See the recipes I have added in the MORE RECIPES page or simply download the latest version of the recipe e-book copy here
