RSYC Merdaka Reggatta will visit Pulau Pangkor

The Royal Selangor  Yacht Club is organizing a race from August 30 to September 3. It will be a contest for racers, cruisers and motor cruisers.

It is an opportunity for club sailing and motor yachts to race or cruise in company from Port Klang to Pulau Pangkor, and enjoy the delights of the islands and social camaraderie.

Mangrove trekking around Lumut

All along the north west Malaysian coast line you will find mangrove forest. The mangrove forest has principally the same purpose as the dunes in north west Europe have: protection of the land behind! The mangrove forest are disappearing and in some ways have to make way for fish and prawn farms. However, in this part of Malaysia there is still a lot of mangrove forest left.

Unfortunately (or not?) not many people realize the possibility of mangrove forest trekkings. And it is such a great thing to do. But there's good news for people visiting Pulau Pangkor. Around Lumut there are quite a few areas for mangrove trekking available.

Read more about the Mangrove forest here:

Turtle Breeding Station Segari

A week or two ago I went for another visit to the Turtle Breeding Station in Segari. At that time, I realized I had never really informed you about the breeding station. That is changed now. I wrote a page with some fine photos of the turtles in Segari at Pasir Panjiang

I was again knocked out by the beauty of these turtles. And for anyone visiting Pangkor Island, a visit to this breeding station should be on the priority list

Tropical fruits

Traveling in Malaysia and not trying some of it's great tropical fruits is missing an essential part of Malaysian food. Fruits are eaten as refreshments and snacks. You will find many places at the roadside where people sell fresh fruits or fruit juices.

There's many different fruits in Malaysia available and I have made a selection of it. Read more about Malaysian tropical fruit here:

Malaysian literature: Rani Manicka: The Rice Mother

Rani Manicka is a Malaysian writer, who published her first novel in 2002. It was called The Rice Mother. Manicka is an economic graduate who was born and graduated in Malaysia though she lives now in England.

The novel is focused on the life of Lakshmi, who (as she writes of on the first page of the novel) "is the fierce spirit of my grandmother".

The novel gives an idea what an Indian family life in Malaysia was in the middle of the 20th Century. It's sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes funny. The Rice Mother is a great book to get a picture of Malaysian family life. It's highly recommended for anyone who has an interest in Malaysia as a country. It is also highly recommended for those who enjoy the books of Isabel Allende, Gabriel Garcia Marquez or Chaim Potok to name a few.

Make your content pre-selling

Sometimes I get emails from people who ask me how to write a website. I love writing though I am not a William Shakespeare, Edgar Allan Poe or Rani Manicka :). Still I can write webpages. You can do the same by following a set of simple rules.

You will by now how much I owe to Sitesell for the success of the Pulau Pangkor website. Sitesell has been teaching many things. Make Your Content Pre-sell has been teaching me how to write webpages so you will enjoy the most. No, you won't learn to become a Shakespeare, Poe or Manicka but you will learn to write decent content for your website.

Malaysian food: Free e-book

The Pangkor Newsletter had last year in every issue some recipes of dishes you can find in and around Pangkor and in other areas in Malaysia. I have collected those recipes and put them together in a free e-book which, until now, was only available for the readers of the Pangkor Newsletter You may have missed the e-book last year. Here's your new chance. Have fun with the preparation of the recipes and enjoy your meal.

Visit the Chinese Cemeteries around Lumut and Pangkor

Visit a graveyard for fun? I visit them sometimes and with all respect for the dead Chinese people here. In the Pangkor area you can visit huge and beautiful cemeteries of Chinese people. Chinese cemeteries are quite famous in this part of Malaysia. This is because the graves of the Chinese people here are beautiful. In short, the graveyards near Lumut, Seri Manjung and Sitiawan are worth a visit. There's on the east side of Pangkor a small graveyard of lesser interest. But if you have some time, visit the big cemetery just before you reach Seri Manjung. They are really worth a visit.
